The Freshman baseball team on Saturday lost for the second time to the Yale freshmen by the score of 6 to 0. Inability to hit the ball and costly errors at critical times by Pierce, Hamlen and Fischel lost the game for Harvard. Yale made only seven hits but bunched five of them in the fourth and sixth innings.
Harvard's batting was notably weak, only one hit being made off Patton. In the whole game Harvard had no one on third, only one on second, and but six on first. In the field the team was very unreliable making seven errors, most of them costly.
Both pitchers were effective each striking out ten men. Alexander, however, showed a tendency to weaken at critical times. Welton caught well for Yale, and easily stopped Harvard's two attempts to steal. Parker, was slow in getting the ball off, and allowed the Yale runners to steal bases almost at will.
In the fourth inning Metcalf singled, and went to second on Hamilton's sacrifice. Patton was put out at first. Metcalf stole third. Welton hit through Pierce, and Metcalf scored. Welton stole second and third. Barnes was given a base on balls and stole second. Chittenden's hit scored both runners. Green struck out. In the sixth Patton hit safely, and took second on Hamlen's muff of a ball thrown to catch him off first. Barnes made a short hit, advancing Patton to third, and then stole second. Both runners scored on Green's hit. Yale scored again in the eighth on errors by Fischel, Bennett and Hamlen, and a stolen base. The score: Two-base hit--Fischel. Sacrifice his--Hamilton. Stolen bases--Metcalf, Patton, Weltan 2, Barnes 3, Chittenden, Green 2. Double play -- Parker to Pierce. Bases on balls--by Patton Rockwell 2, Alexander; by Alexander Barnes, Chittenden.
