UNIVERSITY CREW SQUAD.

H. Bancroft 3L. Comes Out to Row.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University crews were coached yesterday from the launch by E. C. Storrow '89, and R. Bullard '96. The roughness of the water prevented a trial race between the crews. H. Bancroft 3L., came out yesterday for the first time, and rowed at 6 in G. Bancroft's boat. The orders of the crews were as follows.

Stroke, Brownell; 7, Ayer; 6, Davis; 5, Loud; 4, Shuebrul; 3, Emory, Bullard; 2, Blake; bow, Goodell.

Stroke, G. Bancroft; 7, Lawrence; 6, H. Bancroft; 5, Hendeson; 4, McConnell; 3, Francis; 2, Derby; bow, Snite.

Criticism of the Oarsmen.

The crew squad has now been rowing for a week. Mr. Storrow has insisted upon a slow stroke, so that the men can keep their slides slow and master more easily the finer points of the stroke.

Captain Bullard has recently changed over to the starboard side and has done very good work. However, this change is only temporary, as he may go back to stroke. H. Bancroft seems to lack none of his effectiveness of last year. Shuebruk is also rowing well, and is fully as good as a year ago. G. Bancroft's blade work is somewhat unsteady at times, but he has improved greatly in getting a beat into the stroke. Lawrence is not very steady in following the stroke and his blade work is only fair. Henderson is pulling a very effective oar, but he is apt to get his car too high from the water at the catch. McConnell rushes his slide badly at times. Francis pulls a strong oar, but his work is not finished enough. Derby has improved much lately. He is still somewhat slow with his body on the recover, and he slumps at the finish. Snite is rowing too short a stroke, and fails to get his oar near the water at the catch. Brownell is doing very well, but has some difficulty in keeping the stroke long. Ayer is ragged in his blade work and somewhat awkward. Davis feathers under water, and clips badly. Loud has Snite's fault of failing to get his oar near the water at the catch, and he swings too far back at the finish. Emory is very effective, but awkward. Blake, Foster and Smith all seem to lack a strong finish to the stroke. Goodell feathers under water badly, and McGrew is slow in getting forward. Gregg falls over at the catch and rushes his slide.
