8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
The races between the Weld and Newell graded crews were rowed yesterday in spite of the rain and rough water. The races were all close and exciting but the bad conditions prevented fast time. The Weld won the Senior and Intermediate races and the Newell won the Junior and Second Junior.
The Senior race was won by the Weld boat in 10m. 14s. The Newell crew was ahead to the bridge but the Weld boat passed them soon after, rowing a long, steady stroke and finishing two and a half lengths ahead.
The Weld crew also won the intermediate race by four lengths, pulling away from their opponents from the start. The men in the waist of the Newell boat were not effective and made the whole crew slow and lifeless. The time for this race was not taken.
The junior race was very close and exciting. The Weld boat led to the bridge but from there to the finish the race was very even, and had it not been for the bad steering of the coxswain the Weld crew would have won. As it was, although stroke and bow slipped their slides just before the finish, the Newell crew won out by 3 feet in 10m. 40s.
The last and most exciting race was that of the second junior crews. Within the first two hundred yards they fouled and had to start over again. On the second start the crews were even and remained so until the finish. The Weld rowed a long stroke and showed up in better form than the Newell crew. However, by a spurt in the last fifty yards the Newell eight overcame the Weld crew's slight lead and won out by one foot. The time was not taken.
The orders of the winning crews were as follows:
Senior Weld--Stroke, S. Wolcott; 7, Hartwell; 6, Burton; 5, Colby; 4, Sanger; 3, Meier; 2, Evans; bow, Blake.
Intermediate Weld -- Stroke, E. B. Roberts; 7, Dubois; 6, Bent; 5, Richardson; 4, Brooks; 3, Morse; 2, Maltby; bow, Lovejoy.
Junior Newell--Stroke, Roosevelt; 7, Holwill; 6, Scott; 5, Rainsford; 4, Fox; 3, Bigelow; 2, Gray; bow, Storer.
Second Junior Newell--Stroke, Letchworth; 7, Drinker; 6, Mifflin; 5, Otis; 4, Durfee; 3, Wolcott; 2, James; bow, Hull.
