The Junior baseball team defeated the Senior team on Soldiers Field yesterday by a score of 9 to 7 in a poorly played game, in which there was no team work on either side. The fact that no earned runs were made shows clearly the character of the game.
The infielders on both sides were very unreliable, and through errors and slowness, missed many chances to retire runners. Shortstop was a weak position on both teams, Smith making six errors and Chase playing a slow and awkward game. Kendall at first was extremely reliable and Keene, though he made some bad errors, was clever in putting out men at second. Lovering played fairly well but missed several chances and interfered inexcusably with the runners. Wood played a steady game at second. The work of the outfield for both teams was very creditable.
The battery work on both sides was poor. Coburn had fair control, but was inclined to be careless, especially in throwing to bases. Laverack pitched in fair form until the sixth inning, when he went to pieces, allowing a single, a three-bagger and two bases on balls. Three-base hit--Wood. Sacrifice hits -- Christenson, Frothingham, Putnam. Stolen bases-- Smith 2, Kendall, Putnam, Canterbury 2, Parton 3, Milne, Frothingham, Coburn, Lovering. Bases on balls--by Coburn: Keene 2, Kendall, Canterbury, Milne; by Laverack: Christenson 2, Lovering, Ware. Hit by pitched ball-by Laverack: Coburn. Struck out--by Coburn: Keene 3, Laverack 2, Gauterbury, Milne; by Laverack: Chase, Ware; by Putnam: Coburn, Chase, Ware, Passed, balls -- Putnam, Paul. Wild pitch -- Laverack. Time--2h 45m. Umpires--F. G. Farrington, J. D. Clark. "Kendall out, hit by batted ball.
