FIRST DAY ON THE RIVER.

Active Rowing Season Begun at Both Clubs.--Eight Crews Out.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Senior, Junior and Sophomore Newell crews and the Senior and Junior Weld crews went out on the river for the first time yesterday afternoon. The water was very smooth and almost entirely free from ice so that it was possible to use the shells without danger. Each crew was out about half an hour and rowed in short stretches by fours and eights. The blade work of all the men was rather ragged but for the first day the rowing was very encouraging.

Two more Freshman eights were sent out from the Newell, but the men who were out on Saturday rowed on the machines yesterday. It is hard to form an estimate of this year's Freshmen until they have all been on the water, and for this reason no attempt has been made to grade them at either the Weld or Newell. The Weld Sophomores rowed yesterday in the tank and then went on the river in pairs. Both the Sophomore and Freshman crews at the Weld will go out in eights today.

Following are the orders of the crews as they rowed yesterday:
