Statement from Professor Hollis.

Various statements have appeared in the newspapers and in the CRIMSON relating to the surplus from gate money, and the impression seems to prevail that there was $40,000 surplus on athletics last year. As a matter of fact the amount of money turned over to the Treasurer of Harvard College was slightly less than $33,000, and this amount represents the saving of four years.

It has been the policy of the Athletic Committee so far as possible to accumulate enough money to replace the unsightly wooden seats on Soldiers Field, and to improve the property outside of the old dyke, removed when the driveway was made. Few students today realize what Longfellow Marsh and Soldiers Field were five years ago. By economy a certain amount of work has been done towards improving the property, and some money has been spent toward that end, but every year a small amount has been set aside to build new seats. The designs of these seats have been prepared, and are now fairly complete, but they will cost three or four times as much as the Association has in its possession. The plans have been worked up by Professor L. J. Johnson and Mr. McKim, the primary idea being a steel structure covered by concrete. The Athletic Committee depends for the successful completion of this project upon the hearty co-operation of the undergraduates. It will be necessary to save as much as possible for the next three or four years, and the teams should be run with a view to reduction of expenses.

As to the matter of subscriptions, it might not be a bad plan to merge the subscriptions once for all into the H. A. A. tickets. The money thus obtained should be used exclusively for the maintenance and care of the field and boat house, and the gate money should go to the permanent improvements and to the support of teams.
