The Sophomore football team defeated the Freshmen yesterday afternoon by the score of 5 to 0. The game was very unsatisfactory and, owing to the unnecessary roughness and the crowing by the spectators, time was called by the officials before the end of the second half. The teams were very evenly matched; both did poor team work, and both were weak on the defense. The Sophomores, however, showed more aggressiveness and by a series of quick-starting line and end plays were able to score their winning touchdown just before the end of The first half.
The Sophomores kicked off to Harrison who ran the ball back to the 20-yard line. The Freshmen were then forced to punt, but regained the ball on downs at the centre of the field. Short bucks and end runs finally carried the ball to the 25 yard line. Here the Sophomores put up a strong defense and Bolton attempted a drop-kick for goal but failed. After the kick-out, a fumble gave the ball to the Sophomores, but they were unable to gain, and lost it to the Freshmen on downs. Another fumble, however, again put the Sophomores on the offensive at the centre of the field. A 13 yard run around left end and several 5 yard plunges through tackle by De Koven brought the ball to the Freshmen's 30 yard line. Offside play added 10 yards more and, after bucks through the right side of the line had forced the Freshmen to their 3 yard line, Dekoven ran around left end for a touchdown. The goal was missed.
In the second half several regular players were put in the Freshman line-up and the team played a much stronger game. After the kick-off the Sophomores were forced to punt. From the centre of the field the Freshman backs bucked the line for good gains until the game was called, with the ball on the Sophomores'30 yard line.
The line-up: Score-Sophomores 5, Freshmen 0. Touchdown-DeKoven. Umpire-C. Platt'02. Referee-A. Stillman'03. Linesmen-C.H. Robinson '04, R.A. Derby '05. Timekeepers-G.B. Lawton '04 and A.L. Hopkins'05. Time-20 and 15 minute halves. The officials decided That on account of The interference of The spectators, the game should not be counted, but later changed this decision. They make the following statement: Although the element of unfairness in the class football game between the Sophomores and the Freshmen was entirely beyond precedent and likely to undermine class spirit, the officials have decided That their judgement in declaring that the game should be played over, was wrong, since the two classes believed themselves in the right in the tactics they used. The officials feel that a pre. cedent could not be established fairly during the course of a game and have therefore decided that the Sophomore team be decided the winner. At a conference with the University football authorities, this final judgement of the officials was approved, and it was further determined that hereafter class games shall be played in a fair spirit of competition and that the element of unfairness that prevailed in yesterday's game be done away with in the future. In the remaining game of the class football series, this spirit of fairness should be a matter of honor with each class. THE OFFICIALS
