HARVARD, 27; DARTMOUTH, 12.

Harvard defeated Dartmouth Saturday by the score of 27 to 12 in a poorly played game, which showed that Harvard's line substitutes are extremely weak and that the substitute backs do not work well together. The Dartmouth team, must be given full credit, however, for playing the strongest game of any team which Harvard has met this year. Harvard's line was not quick in charging and did not play well together, often starting ahead of the ball and being frequently penalized for so doing. The Harvard backs were unsteady and often slow in starting, and, with the exception of Graydon, seemed unable to gain ground consistently. There was very little interference and even that was broken up because of the weakness of the tackles. To this weakness of the tackles was due Dartmouth's ability to gain through the line, for the centre trio showed a steady and effective defense and helped the rest of the line. An encouraging improvement was shown, however, in the elimination of serious fumbling.

Sargent at centre played a reliable game and for the most part passed well. Lee played a steady and effective game, but lacked the aggressiveness of Barnard. Barnard did especially well, holding effectively on the defense and breaking through and dragging the runner along on the offense. His run of 50 yards was the result of extremely clever playing. Wright at left tackle was more effective on the offense than on the defense. He handled himself awkwardly and did not take care of his opponent. J. T. Jones, who took his place, played aggressively, but not with good judgment. Lawrence at right tackle was not strong in defense and on the offense did not get his opponent out of the way. He gained ground unusually well on the tackles-back play. Bowditch at right end got down well under punts and played reliably. He was too eager, however, and twice caused a loss of 10 yards for offside play. Matthews, who took his place, was fairly capable. Motley was as steady as usual, and got down well under punts; but allowed himself to be blocked off too much by the interference. Clark got down quickly on punts and tackled well. Marshall played a sure game at quarterback and used judgment in running plays. Daly, who took his place, besides running the team well, made a drop-kick goal from the 30 yard line. He was slow in getting away his punts. Graydon was the only one of the backs who could gain ground steadily. Putnam punted poorly and did not follow his interference closely. Derby, Jones and Devens gained some ground at times, but were not reliable enough, McGrew kept his feet well and was able to gain consistently on line plunges.

Dartmouth ran the kick-off back 15 yards. The Dartmouth line held well and Harvard advanced to the 35 yard line by short gains only. Losing 10 yards for offside play, Harvard was forced to resort to the expedient of going back 20 yards and keeping the ball. This brought it to Harvard's 50 yard line where Putnam was forced to punt. Dartmouth returned the punt on the next play to the 40 yard line, Putnam running it back 10 yards. Short gains through the tackles, chiefly by Lawrence and Graydon, and 10 yards for offside play, brought the ball to the 12 yard line, whence Graydon carried it over. Putnam made a poor puntout and no goal was kicked. The next kick off went over the goal line. Putnam punted to the 55 yard line where Patterson made a fair catch. Griffin tried for a place kick, but failed and Lawrence ran the ball to the 30 yard line. A 10 yard run by Devens, 10 yards for offside play and gains through the line by Graydon brought the ball to the 45 yard line, where Harvard lost 10 yards for offside play and was forced to punt. Witham punted and Putnam ran the kick back 25 yards. Short gains through the line and a 15 yard run by Graydon brought the ball to the 7 yard line. Graydon gained 5 yards and Lawrence then carried the ball over. Lawrence missed a difficult goal. Devens caught the kick-off on the goal line and carried it 22 yards. Putnam was tackled for a loss on the next play and fell back to punt. The line did not hold and the punt was blocked, Morse falling on the ball just over the goal line. The punt-out was caught and Griffin kicked goal. Time was called without further scoring.

Dartmouth kicked off and Motley ran it back 12 yards. Graydon gained 5 yards in two plays and Putnam then punted. Dartmouth returned the punt on the next play to Putnam, who gained 12 yards. Three short gains through the line were made and Graydon then broke through right tackle for 40 yards. Dartmouth held for two downs on the 13 yard line, but Graydon gained 6 yards. Wright was then pushed over for a touchdown. Lawrence kicked goal. Putnam caught the next kick-off on the 5 yard line and ran it in 23 yards. Putnam then punted to the middle of the field. Dartmouth gained 17 yards by rushing and 5 for interference and then tried a place kick goal from the field. The kick fell short. Devens punted to midfield. On the next play Barnard broke through the line, caught the ball as it was passed and ran 50 yards for a touchdown. Lawrence kicked goal. Graydon ran the next kick-off back 22 yards. G. L. Jones gained 10 yards around left end. After an exchange of punts McGrew took Graydon's place and by short rushes advanced the ball to the 25 yard line. Derby gained 7 yards and Daly then fell back and scored a drop kick goal from the field. After several exchanges of punts Dartmouth tried a place kick goal, unsuccessfully. G. L. Jones got the kick on the 13 yard line. On the next play Daly's punt was blocked. R. Brown picked it up and scored a touchdown for Dartmouth. Griffin kicked goal.
