Harvard will play Bates this afternoon on Soldiers Field at 3 o'clock. In past years Harvard has found no difficulty in defeating Bates by large scores, and should have little trouble in doing so this year, as of last year's team Bates has left only four men. Last Saturday Exeter defeated Bates 6 to 5.
The line-up: The practice yesterday lacked the energy and dash of that on Thursday, but on the other hand was characterized by less fumbling. There was a great deal of offside play and holding in the line which prevented any scoring. In spite of this, many of the line men made effective openings, of which the backs were quick to take advantage. Ristine, at right half, started quickly, hit the line hard and kept his feet well. McGrew at full back and Derby at left half were quick in starting, and found the openings accurately. Robinson and Cutts at guard, and Graydon and Lawrence at tackle, were successful in offensive charging, and in blocking their men. Matthews at quarter tackled surely, and prevented several and gains. Scott at full back was slow in getting off his punts. Rainsford kicked off to Ristine, who ran the ball back for 15 yards. After short gains by the first, the second secured the ball on offside play. Successive gains by McGrew and Noyes advanced the ball to the 20 yard line, where the first held them for downs. From this point the first eleven advanced the ball by the excellent work of Ristine and Derby, to the 25 yard line, where time was called. In the second half the first eleven kicked off. The second eleven could not gain and was forced to punt, but regained the ball on downs. After short gains the second was again held, but secured the ball on its 10 yard line through offside play. Scott punted to S. Noyes, who fumbled, Mayer falling on the ball. The first regained the ball on offside play and through short gains by Knowles and Swann advanced it to the 8 yard line, where they lost it on offside play. Scott punted, but the second kept the ball on a fumble by Swan. Time was called with the ball on the second eleven's 20 yard line. The line-up:
