HARD FOOTBALL PRACTICE.

Playing Marred by Fumbling, but Shows Much Spirit.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University football practice yesterday was the hardest so far this year, and, except for the fumbling, was very encouraging. The men played with dash, and got into the plays in good style. On line plays the backs and ends worked well together, but on end plays there was little interference. The fumbling was more frequent yesterday than at any previous time, and interfered greatly with the playing.

Cutts, Barnard, Lawrence and Graydon made openings whenever called upon, and blocked the opposing plays thoroughly. Back of the line, Jennings, Ristine and Derby, at halfback, made effective gains, and McGrew and Meier at fullback hit the line low and hard. Matthews, at quarter, tackled cleverly, backed up the line well, and took advantage of fumbles.

The second eleven kicked off to Jennings, who was tackled by Matthews before he could gain. On the next play Jennings went around right end for 20 yards, and was again tackled by Matthews. Motley then secured the ball on fumble, but the second eleven immediately lost it on downs. After a gain by Jennings, Knowles fumbled the ball, and Matthews got it; but the second eleven was again unable to advance. The first eleven fumbled again, but retained the ball, and on the next play Jennings made four yards. Mifflin fell back for a punt, but a low pass spoiled the kick, which went only a few yards. The second eleven fumbled, and failed to make their distance. The first was held for downs, and time was called, with the ball in possession of the second team.

In the second half the first eleven kicked off to Matthews, who was tackled by Ristine. The second fumbled the ball for loss, and failed to make their distance. The first eleven fumbled, but retained the ball; and on short gains by Meier and Ristine advanced to the 20 yard line, where they were held for downs. McGrew's punt was blocked, but Rainsford fell on the ball. McGrew got the next punt away quickly, and Swann ran it back 5 yards. Ristine made 5 yards through right tackle, but the first eleven could not gain on the next four downs. Gains by McGrew and Derby netted 10 yards, and Matthews gained on a fumble. The first eleven was pushed back 10 yards further, but then secured the ball on a fumble. Ristine twice gained first down, but the ball was again dropped. The first immediately regained it on a fumble, and on steady gains by Ristine and Meier brought the ball to the 25 yard line, when time was called. Score, 0 to 0.
