The following letter has been recently received from Mr. Sargent in regard to the painting of Major Higginson's portrait:

James Lawrence, Jr., Esq.

MY DEAR SIR:--I would consider it a great honor to be commissioned by the students of Harvard to paint. Major Higginson. I could do it best later on towards the summer. Just at present and for the next couple of months my time is very fully taken up" . . . "Hoping to learn whether I am to be crowned with this interesting commission, and that Major Higginson will keep me posted as to his movements, I am Yours very truly,   JOHN S. SARGENT.
