Freshmen Defeated by Exeter.

The Freshman eleven was defeated by Exeter Saturday, by a score of 6-0. The score does not show the relative strength of the two teams, however, as Exeter was plainly superior in almost every part of the game, and but for fumbling and offside play at critical times would have run up a larger score. The Freshmen played fairly well, but were unable to stop the slow moving mass plays against tackle, which with the greater weight of the Exeter team were almost sure of gaining ground. In fact Exeter tried but three end plays during the game, depending entirely on mass plays, and was not forced to kick at all. The Freshmen, on the other hand, had the ball only about two minutes in the first half and were almost entirely on the defense in the second, so that a fair test of their offensive play was hardly possible. Their only real ground gaining was done in the first half when, after rushing the ball for a slight gain, Bunting was sent around left end for twenty yards.

With the exception of R. Derby at left guard and Sard at left tackle, all the line men were outplayed by their opponents. The right side of the line was particularly weak and gains were made repeatedly through both Brook and Chase. Kidder at centre played too high and was slow in charging his man. The backs played fairly well together when they had the ball, the work of Bunting being especially good. Robeson was effective in the interference but his kicking was very poor, lacking both accuracy and distance. At quarterback, Elkins showed poor judgment at times, but his work on the defensive was excellent, several times preventing a touchdown by tackles in the open field.

Exeter's touchdown was made soon after the first kick-off on a steady advance down the field by short line plays.
