GEORGETOWN, 8; HARVARD, 2

Nine Weakened by Reld's Absence.--Georgetown Battery Superior.

The University nine was defeated by Georgetown yesterday afternoon through inability to hit White. Only one hit was made outside of the eighth inning, when Harvard bunched three clean hits but lost a chance to score through G. C. Clark's attempt to make three bases on his two-base hit to right centre. The failure to hit White does not necessarily indicate a slump in batting, for the ball was hit hard a number of times when Georgetown's fast fielding prevented safe hits. Such a showing against White, one of the best men pitching on college teams this year, is not discreditable. Georgetown did not hit Kernan hard, but bunched hits when they were needed and took advantage of bases on balls and Harvard's errors.

Harvard was handicapped both at the bat and in the field by the absence of Reid. J. D. Clark, who took his place, allowed three passed balls and was weak at the bat. Fincke played well at second and Coolidge at short was up to his usual form again. G. C. Clark's throwing to first was uncertain. He made one wild throw and gave Kendall two difficult chances.

Harvard's two runs were scored in the first inning. Kendall and Fincke were given bases on balls and a double steal put them on second and third. Both runners scored on Downes's fumble of Wendell's grounder. In Georgetown's half of the inning Downes gained his base on balls and stole second. Golden singled to left field, Downes taking third. Downes scored and Golden took second on a passed ball. Walsh was given a base on balls and a passed ball advanced both runners one base. Golden scored on Devlin's long fly to Loughlin. In the fourth inning Devlin singled and Byrne was given a base on balls. White's home run to left field brought them both in. Walsh and Devlin singled in the eighth inning. Kernan fumbled Cranston's bunt and the bases were full. Loughlin dropped Byrne's long drive and allowed him to reach third. Walsh and Devlin scored but Cranston failed to touch the plate and was put out. Byrne scored on White's safe bunt.
