Yale and Princeton Baseball

The return of C. P. Cook '01 S. to pitchers position has greatly strengthened the Yale nine. Cook has been unable to play up to this time because of deficiencies in his studies. He has good speed and curves, and his work is less erratic than it was last year. When not pitching he will play in the outfield, as he can cover a good deal of ground and is a strong hitter. A chance in the outfield was given G. B. Ward '02, who has been playing well on the college nine, but he proved unsatisfactory. The make-up of the infield has not been changed at all, and probably will not be, as Sharpe, Quinby, Camp and Brown are playing as fast a game as any Yale infield has played for years. Garvan pitched the one game played by Yale last week and held Lafayette down to five hits. Yale won the game, 7 to 1, outplaying Lafayette at all points. Yale's batting was not strong, but the fielding was very clean. The game scheduled with the Orange Athletic Club for last Saturday was prevented by the rain.

Hard, consistent batting is the feature of Princeton's work, and has won games against Lawrenceville, Brown and Cornell during the past week. In the last two games every man on the team hit safely, Burke and Meier batting especially well. In base-running the team is doing better work than at any previous time this season. Princeton played an errorless game against Lawrenceville and made but one error in the Cornell game, but in the Georgetown and Brown games the team showed a tendency to go to pieces. Hillebrand was very effective against both Brown and Cornell, and Lawrenceville could do nothing with Scott.
