Mr. J. H. Gardiner has recently published "Forms of English Prose Literature," a new manual of criticism and composition primarily designed as a companion book to Professor Barrett Wendell's "English Composition." The style is attractive and the twenty examples well chosen; though not departing from the usual lines of an English manual, the book is evidently the result of independent study and reflection.

"Practical Agitation" (Scribner's) by John Jay Chapman '84 is a collection of seven critical essays dealing with some of the provinces of modern life. "Election and Election Time," "The Masses," "Literature and Journalism," and "Principles" are some of the chief themes. The essays are thoughtful, but at the same time show keen originality and independence.

Houghton, Mifflin & Co. have just published a life of Charles Summer by Moorfield Storey '66, as the concluding volume of the series of American Statesmen.

Professor P. B. Marcou and Dr. J. D. M. Ford are at work on a Spanish English Dictionary to be published shortly by D. C. Heath & Co., Boston.
