Harvard won the first game of the baseball season on Soldiers Field. Saturday afternoon, defeating Boston College by a score of 8 to 7. In the field the team showed up well except in the last three innings, when all of the six errors were made. The batting was decidedly weak, only four men hitting safely. In the first two innings the batting and base-running showed vigor and good judgment but the lead of six runs seemed to take all life and snap out of the play.
Of the three pitchers tried, Kernan did by far the best work, allowing Boston College only one hit in four innings. After giving two bases in the first inning, he settled down and in the next three innings only two men reached first base. Stillman and McDonald were fairly effective but were given very poor support. Milne, though responsible for two costly passed balls and a wild throw, was generally steady, and caught two difficult fouls.
In the infield, the best work was done by George and G. C. Clark. Coolidge played well except for one bad throw. J. D. Clark did not show up well at first base, and was unable to hit the ball outside of the diamond. Wendell, in left field, played the best game for Harvard, making four clean singles and a catch which resulted in a double play. He was weak, however, in base-running. Loughlin played his usual lively game and showed ability to take advantage of opponents' misplays.
