Rowing of Graded Crews

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Last Thursday the men retained for the graded club crews began work on the river. The eights were made up as follows:

Weld first -- Stroke, G. Bancroft; 7, Ladd; 6, Tilton; 5, H. Bancroft; 4, Snuebruk; 3, Wood; 2, Evans; bow, Martin, DuBois; cox., Boothby.

Newell First -- Stroke, Higginson; 7, Sheafe, 6, Lawrence; 5, McConnell; 4, Fitzgerald; 3, Henderson; 2, Gale; bow, Goodell; cox., Howe.

Weld second--Stroke, Locke; 7, Grew; 6, Burton; 5, Ivins, 4, Holden; 3, Colby; 2, Sheperd; bow, Snite; cox., Goodwin.

Newell second -- Stroke, Brownell; 7, Swaim; 6, Gilchrist; 5, Merritt; 4, R. Lawrence; 3, Peyton; 2, Cunningham; bow, Hawkins; cox., Jackson.

The order in which the crews last rowed was quite different from the first make-up. In the first Weld boat H. Bancroft who had been tried at starboard returned to 6, Tilton moved to 4, sending Shuebruk to the second boat and DuBois replaced Martin at bow. In the second crew, Martin sent Grew from 7 to 3, and Shuebruk moved Holden from 4 to 2. On Saturday Morrill and Locke divided the time at stroke, and Colby was tried at 2 and at 3. Snite has also been tried at bow and at stroke.

At the Newell, Goodell and Henderson have alternated at bow and 3 in the first boat, and Bullard's return on Friday sent Gale down to the second. Morris also replaced Hawkins at bow in the second boat.

As the "John Harvard" has been at Lawley's preparing for New London, the crews at both clubs have taken turns with the "Veritas," Mr. Storrow coaching the Newell eights, and Donovan and H. Bancroft the Weld. The first Weld is a powerful crew and accordingly has considerable speed in spite of its weight, but its time is not yet as accurate as that of the second, which has thus far shown better rowing than the first.

At the Newell the first crew is traveling well and smoothly, but the work of the second is not so satisfactory as that of the Weld second.

The order of the crews as they rowed on Saturday follows:

First Weld -- Stroke, G. Bancroft; 7, Ladd; 6, H. Bancroft (capt.); 5, Wood; 4, Tilton; 3, Emory; 2, Evans; bow, DuBois; cox., Boothby.

Second Weld--Stroke, Morrill, Locke; 7, Martin; 6, Burton; 5, Ivins; 4, Shuebruk; 3, Grew; 2, Holden; bow, Sheperd (capt.); cox., Goodwin.

First Newell -- Stroke, Higginson (capt.); 7, Sheafe; 6. J. Lawrence; 5, McConnell; 4, Fitzgerald; 3, Henderson; 2, Bullard, Harding; bow, Goodell; cox., Howe.

Second Newell -- Stroke, Brownell; 7, Swaim; 6, Gale, Gilchrist; 5, Merritt; 4, R. Lawrence; 3, Peyton; 2, Cunningham; bow, Morris; cox, Jackson.
