[The auditor of Randall Hall printed a statement yesterday on the backs of the dinner cards which, as a communication, we refused to print in these columns. We were willing to print the facts in the statement, and made several offers to do so, but we objected to many irrelevant remarks which it contained and which the auditor refused to cut out. The statement as we offered to print it follows.]--EDS.
First, as to the complaint that the steward's salary has been raised. The present steward agreed to take up the work at Randall Hall, at the same salary paid by the Foxcroft Club, until the membership of the new Association should be known, when a just salary could be determined. About a month ago the running of the Association had reached a fairly fixed state; the membership, the receipts, the expenditures, had all increased to more than two times the Foxcroft amounts. The Board of Directors therefore voted to place the steward's pay as nearly as possible in a just relation to his increased responsibility and labor. The salary voted was an increase of two thirds. And it should be kept in mind that the amount now received by the steward of Randall Hall is only a little more than half the amount received by the steward of Memorial Hall.
Second, as to costs and prices. A thorough investigation of the prices paid for provisions by Randall Hall has shown that the steward's buying is as economical as that of the stewards of Memorial Hall and the best Boston hotels; that through the vigilance of the steward and the Board of Directors the expenses have been reduced, since the beginning of the year, one hundred and fifty dollars per week; that in spite of a greatly increased membership there have been fewer complaints of food in the complaint box than ever before; that no prices on the present bill of fare are higher than the prices in previous years, except cereals which cost one cent more.
The directors have tried in every way to cut down expenses and keep Randall Hall prices at the level set by the Foxcroft Club. The prices have not been increased. Randall Hall is run entirely by students of Harvard University. The Board of Directors, fifteen representative members, is alone responsible for the management of the Association.
