M. D. Whitman 2L and E. R. Marvin 2L successfully defended their title of University champions in doubles yesterday by defeating S. H. Derby 2 L. and R. A. Bidwell 2L. in three straight sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-4. From the first Whitman and Marvin were the leaders. They were steady throughout and played a swift game; their lobbing especially was very accurate and won many points for them. Derby and Bidwell played a wild game, netting many balls and putting them constantly out of court. They had one peculiar overhand stroke, however, which proved very effective at times.
On the first set Marvin and Whitman started strongly, winning four straight games. Then their opponents rallied and succeeded in winning three games, after which Marvin and Whitman ran out the set. The second set was a repitition of the first, Derby and Bidwell securing one game after losing the first five. In the third set Derby and Bidwell played better, winning four games.
