As the regular college work begins today, the football squad was given its last morning practice yesterday. After some tackling of the dummy in which the men showed great improvement, they were given a short and sharp run to end the practice.
In the afternoon, W. H. Lewis, L. S. '93, coached the line-men in blocking off, with the especial idea of opening up holes. Meanwhile the backs and ends practiced kicking, catching, and following punts. After about fifteen minutes of this work, a first eleven with substitutes was chosen. The rest of the men about twenty-five in number, will form the second eleven. They have been put in charge of E. Gray '00, who will pick out the most promising players before the squad is reduced.
After a little signal practice, the first eleven lined up against the scrub for a ten minute half. Owing to the strong work of several members of the second eleven, the first eleven was able to score but once, Ellis who took Warren's place making the touchdown. A second ten-minute half was played in which the substitutes took the place of the first eleven. Ellis scored another touchdown.
The general play was snappy for this time of year, but very ragged. There was much fumbling on both sides, and the backs showed great lack of team work. There was also need for much improvement in the tackling. The punting is in general promising, although Reid is a trifle slow as yet. Gierasch played a quick running game, and Ellis plunged the line for sure gains. Burnett was out for exercise, but did not play. There is an unusual lack of heavy centre men.
The line-up follows.
