The Department of Comparative Literature in conjunction with the Modern Language Department issued a circular in February of this year asking for subscriptions to enable them to establish a Lowell Memorial Library of like nature to the Child Memorial Library. The answer has been such as to accomplish the object and the books will be transferred, within a few days, from Elmwood to the Library.
The late James Russell Lowell, during his term of service in the Smith Professorship, made a large collection of books in the Romance Languages, mainly in Old French and Spanish. In his will be gave from this collection such books as were not already to be found on the shelves of the Harvard College Library, but the greater part of the collection remained in the hands of his heirs. This part consists of over seven hundred volumes, many of them of great interest to the student of Romance Languages, not only of course by reason of their intrinsic value, but also because they contain annotations by Professor Lowell which reflect his originality of criticism and thorough scholarship.
