The first dress rehearsal of the Cercle play for this year, Bergerac's "Le Pedant Joue," will be held this evening at 7 o'clock in Brattle Hall. This will probably be the first time that the play has been put on the stage, although large parts have been taken bodily from it by more popular authors, especially Moliere. The original play contained five acts, but in order to bring it into suitable compass for amateur theatricals it has been found necessary to cut it down to three acts. This work was done by M. C. H. Bernard and H. B. Stanton '00.
The rehearsals of the speaking parts have been going on for several weeks under the superintendence of M. Bernard, and the men should by this time have become fairly well acquainted with their parts.
As usual, the ballets will form an important and interesting part of the performances. This year a minuet and a serpentine dance have been arranged, both of which are simpler than the average of those introduced in previous plays. J. J. Coleman has been coaching all the members of the ballet.
The cast follows: The following men will dance in the ballet: Minuet--L. C. Ledyard '00, G. B. Perry '03, P. E. Coyle '01, H. Tappin '00. Serpentine--R. Wellman '03, E. M. Brush '01, W. L. Cropley '01, S. Burton '03, H. R. Hayes '01, G. H. Tower '01, H. B. Whitman '03. Dancing clown, A. E. Ells '02; Fortune, E. B. Ahlborn. The following men are managers of the play: B. D. Barker '01 and T. J. Eastman '01, business managers; E. L. Dudley '00, stage manager; R. C. Hatch '00, master of properties; W. L. Cropley '01, in charge of the ballet. M. W. Barber '00 is getting out the programme. The poster was designed by R. H. Greely '01. No special music has been arranged for the play, but the Bohemian orchestra will render suitable selections. The regular public performances will be held in Brattle Hall on December 14 and 16, and in Copley Hall, Boston, on December 18 and 19.
