Yesterday's practice was loose at times, but otherwise fast and aggressive. Although the 'Varsity was held for downs by the second eleven but once in the course of the line up, three times the ball was lost for holding. The new defence was very effective, not only preventing the second from gaining, but also easily breaking up the guards-back formation. In the preliminary practice, the first eleven devoted some time to the study of new formations and trick-plays, while Sawin tried for goals from the field.
In the line-up against the second, there was constant kicking, in which Reid's long spiral punts were of especial value. Campbell's playing was good. Burnett missed a goal from the forty-yard line, besides making some poor passes.
Reid played a poor game at fullback. He went into the line without any dash, and failed to gain at all. Ellis was greatly superior to him. An injury to Hollingsworth's shoulder necessitates an important change in the line-up for Saturday's game. Merriman was tried yesterday at left guard, a position he will probably fill in the Carlisle game.
The coaches assisting Dibblee yesterday were J. Cranston, J. S. Mason, J. C. Fairchild, W. H. Lewis, E. N. Wrightington, W. C. Forbes, J. Upton, and A. E. Doucette.
The line-up yesterday was:
