FIRST WELD WINS

Defeats First Newell by a Length.--Second Weld Defeats Second Newell.

The interclub boat race yesterday was won by a scant length by the first Weld crew in 9 minutes and 44 seconds, fairly good time considering that the wind blew across the course, kicking up a choppy sea which bothered the star-board men considerably. The first Newell crew, which was second at the finish, was a length and three-quarters ahead of the second Weld, which in turn led the second Newell by a quarter of a length of open water. The start was not made until one o'clock owing to the difficulty of securing a coxswain for the second Weld crew. C. H. Morrill '00, who finally took the place, more than compensated for his extra weight by the way he drove the crew in the race.

The first Weld and the second Newell got the best of the other two crews on the start, but the first Newell rapidly drew up to second place which it kept throughout the race. At the end of the first half mile the Weld crew lead by a length and a quarter, but by hard rowing, followed by a spurt at the bridge, the Newell crew reduced this lead to three-quarters of a length. The Weld gradually drew away again, but just before the finish the Newell spurted again until they were only half a length behind. G. Bancroft, stroke of the Weld crew, who was rowing with splendid form and judgment, waited until the Newell's spurt had spent itself and then hit up the stroke and brought his crew in an even length ahead.

The race between the second crews was more exciting, although the finish was not so close as between the first boats. First one eight and then the other took the lead by sharp spurts and the two crews were practically side by side until the Weld drew away at the finish. This race ends the fall rowing season except for the Freshmen, who will row next Tuesday over a course of one mile and a half. The winning crews were made up as follows:

First Weld--Stroke, G. Bancroft '02; 7, W. E. S. Griswold 1L.; 6, H. Bancroft 2L.; 5, C. B. Wood 2L.; 4, W. Shuebruk '02; 3, G. B. Emory '02; 2, R. F. Blake G. bow, A. DuBois 2L.; cox., H. A. Wadleigh '00.

Second Weld--Stroke, C. W. Locke '01; 7, G. G. Brainerd '01; 6, R. O. Burton '01; 5, W. M. Ivins '01; 4, W. B. Wheelwright '01; 3, S. G. Brooks '02; bow, G. H. Richardson '02; cox., C. H. Morrill '00.
