The graded crews of the Weld and Newell Clubs will race at noon today, down stream, over the regular class crew course, starting at the railroad bridge, and finishing at the Union Boat House. This is the first time that there has been any Newell fall crew, for the club was only started last February, but in the past there have usually been races at this time of year between the Weld eights and crews formed at the University boat-house. This fall there is no 'Varsity rowing, but most of last year's crews are on the club eights. The first Weld contains Bancroft, Wood and Blake of last year's University crew, besides Griswold, who rowed for the last three years on the Yale crew; the Newell has Higginson, Sheafe, Tilton, and Harding.
Until Tuesday the race promised to be slightly in favor of the Newell crew, but on that day Glidden, who was rowing at 3 in the Newell eight, stopped rowing. Frost was tried in his place, but as he could not row in the race, Morris, who rowed bow in last year's Freshman crew, but has not been in training this fall, was put in at bow yesterday, and DuBois was moved from bow to Glidden's place at 3. Although Morris is a very good oar, any change at so late a date tends to make the crew considerably slower. The race is sure to be well contested and is likely to be won or lost in the last quarter of a mile. The second crews are very evenly matched. The drawing for courses resulted in the Second Weld crew's getting the place next to the Beacon street wall, with the Second Newell, First Weld, and First Newell in the order named. This drawing is a fortunate one, since it places the corresponding crews of the two clubs on equal footings as regards tide and wind conditions. The officials for the race have not yet been chosen.
The order of the crews follow:
First Weld--Stroke, G. Bancroft; 7, Griswold; 6, H. Bancroft; 5, Wood; 4, Shuebruk; 3, Emory; 2, Blake; bow, A. DuBois; cox., Wadleigh.
First Newell -- Stroke, Higginson; 7, Sheafe; 6, Tilton; 5, Goodell; 4, Gilchrist; 3, F. R. DuBois; 2, Harding; bow, Morris; cox., Goodwin.
Second Weld -- Stroke, Locke; 7, Brainard; 6, Burton; 5, Ivins; 4, Wheelwright; 3, Brooks; 2, Brownell; bow, Richardson; cox., Boothby.
Second Newell -- Stroke, Byrd: 7, Swaim; 6, Lowe; 5, McConnell; 4, Gale; 3, Fitzgerald; 2, Smith; bow, Jackson; cox., Watson.
