BROWN DEFEATED, 11-0

In every department of straight football, with the possible exception of punting, Brown was distinctly outclassed in Saturday's game, some cleverly worked trick plays alone preventing Harvard from running up a much larger score. None of the guards back formations or mass plays which Brown tried against the line were able to gain at all.

Harvard used straight football tactics throughout the game. After the first ten minutes of play had proved that Brown has the best pair of ends which the team has met this season, the unsuccessful interference plays were given up for a steady battering of Brown's line. It was a succession of attacks on centre and right tackle which resulted in the two touchdowns made. In punting, Harvard had rather the worst of it. Owing to the fast work of the Brown ends, Sawin and Daly had few opportunities to make the long dodging runs which have been a feature of the practice lately. Hallowell and Campbell made the most of Sawin's punts, especially Campbell, whose tackling was very effective. Sawin held his own against Bates in the first half, gaining on almost every exchange of punts, but in the second his kicks lacked distance, and were poorly placed.

The work of the Harvard tackles was the most gratifying feature of the game. Donald's defense was faultless, and on the offense he was of material assistance to the runner on every play. J. Lawrence also showed himself to be unexpectedly strong, and let few plays pass him.

After Burnett had kicked off, Richardson made twenty yards around Hallowell. Frequent punting made the ball change hands often, Harvard occasionally trying Brown's ends, with little success. Brown finally attempted rushing, but lost the ball for offside play. Failing to gain around Cuddy, Sawin punted on the third down, the ball going outside on Brown's twenty-yard line. Bates returned a low, bounding ball, which Sawin cleverly handled. Daly then changed his tactics, and, after ten plays, alternating centre plunges and mass plays on tackle, Kendall was sent across for a touchdown. Sawin kicked an easy goal. The same line bucking game was tried again, with the result that the ball was advanced to the five-yard line, where it was lost on downs. Brown punted safely, and, with the ball in the centre of the field, time was called.

In the second half, Kendall returned the kick-off successfully, gaining twenty yards. On a trick formation, Campbell tackled Cuddy for a loss, but on the next down, a long pass gained thirty yards around Hallowell. Although Hapgood made two short gains, Brown was unable to get the necessary five yards, and on Sawin's punt, Campbell downed Pratt on Brown's fifteen-yard line. Richardson gained forty-five yards around Hallowell before he was downed by Ellis. After more punting, Harvard obtained possession of the ball, and, by vigorous plunges at centre advanced it until Ellis finally carried it across the line. The touchdown was not allowed, however, because of holding in the line, and the ball was brought back and given to Brown. A successful trick on Campbell ran the ball back to the centre of the field, where Chesbro was disqualified for unfair play. Burnett then secured the ball on a fumble, and it was steadily advanced by line-bucking. Ellis made fifteen yards and on the next rush scored the second touchdown. Sawin missed the goal after a good punt out by Daly. Daly returned the kick-off, and, after an exchange of punts, the game ended with the ball in Brown's possession, near the centre of the field.
