The Freshmen were defeated by Yale 1901 in the final game of the season yesterday afternoon on Soldiers Field by the score of 5 to 4. Yale's scoring, with the exception of the winning run, was all done in the first three innings, after which MacDonald allowed but two hits. Weakness at the bat was the main reason for 1901's defeat. Their fielding was, on the whole, praiseworthy, and at times brilliant. In the eighth inning, with the bases full and but one man out, Fincke caught Boyce's low fly and threw Clark out at third; while in the seventh Cropley made the star play of the game, pulling in Taylor's sharp liner which looked like a home run.

The game was interesting throughout and marked by good playing at critical times. The Yale freshmen were in the lead up to the seventh inning, when Cropley's single enabled both Jaynes and Fincke to score, thereby tieing the score. In the eighth and ninth neither side was able to cross the plate. After Irwin had flied out in the tenth, however, Clark singled, advanced to third and scored on Putnam's error. This proved to be the winning run, for, although the Freshmen had men on second and third with only one out, a strike out and a foul fly retired the side.
