Close Ten Inning Game.- Harvard Makes No Errors.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The 'Varsity nine defeated Phillips Andover yesterday afternoon by a score of 2-1, in an interesting game of ten innings. Harvard's first run was scored in the second inning when Reid reached first on Chapman's error and was brought in by Laughlin's triple. After that, until the tenth inning, Stephenson pitched very aggressive ball and retired the 'Varsity without any appreciable opportunity for scoring. Then Burgess was hit by a pitched ball, stole second, and scored the winning run on Haughton's timely hit.

The game was remarkably interesting in a number of particulars. For six of the ten innings only eighteen men batted for Andover, but three hits were made off Hayes, and he was credited with nine strike-outs and eight assists. No errors were made by Harvard and two double plays were made by each side, although Andover's were both due in part to Clark's and McCornick's careless base running.

For the first five innings Hayes pitched his poorest game, giving seven bases on balls. He steadied down very much during the rest of the game and forced Andover by steady, aggressive work when it was most needed.

The batting orders and summary follow:
