A short and most valuable "Sketch of the Philosophy of American Literature" has just been published. The book is written by Greenough White, A. M., Harvard '84, and shows a wonderful familiarity with American authors. It points out the connection between our country's literature and history, and shows how new forms in letter and art have arisen as advancing thought required,-a task not attempted hitherto. It is an excellent key to the whole subject of American literature, and has been favorably criticised by certain members of our English department.
