THE 'VARSITY NINE.

Loses to Tufts on Saturday Afternoon on Account of Poor Batting.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The 'Varsity nine was defeated by Tufts College on Saturday afternoon in a wretchedly played game, by a score of 7 to 3.

Tufts secured a lead of three runs in the first inning when Fitz hit two men, besides giving two bases on balls and allowing two hits. During the rest of the game, however, he steadied down very perceptibly, and pitched fast aggressive ball.

The defeat of the 'varsity may be attributed directly to the failure to hit the ball. After the improvement shown in recent practice, it certainly seems reasonable to expect more than four hits off a pitcher of Curran's ability. Moreover two of the four hits made were scratches and Lynch's triple to right field was the result of Ericsson's misjudgment.

In fielding, Foster did some clean, fast work on ground balls, although he made an inexcusable error in the first inning when Davis threw to catch a runner at third.

The score by innings follows:

Innings, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Harvard, 0 1 0 0 2 0 0 0 -3

Tufts, 4 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 1 -7
