THE CREWS.

A letter received from Poughkeepsie at the CRIMSON office contains the following account of the doings of the crews since they left Poughkeepsie:

The trip by the Fall River boat to New York was uneventful. The crews arrived at 7 a. m., and, after breakfasting at the Manhattan Hotel, took the train on the New York Central, reaching Poughkeepsie at 2 in the afternoon. A tug was chartered to take the men and the shells up to the quarters, and in the afternoon both crews practiced rowing short stretches for a while, Mr. Lehmann coaching from one of the tubs, as the launch, owing to rough water on the Hudson, did not appear until Friday.

Both crews retired early Thursday night, breakfasting at 8 Friday morning and going out on the river at 9.30, where they practiced starts and short-time rows, coached from the launch. Owing to their English A exam. in the afternoon the Freshmen lunched at 12.45 instead of at 1.30. At 5.30 tubs were used by both crews, and then the 'Varsity went out in the eight.

On Saturday, the morning work consisted of a half hour's easy paddling for both crews. In the afternoon the 'Varsity went over the four-mile course on time, the Freshmen taking them up over the first mile and holding them very well, being beaten by only half a length. The time of the trial was not given out.

The order of both crews has remained unchanged since they left Cambridge. The men turn in at 10 p. m. and get up for a short walk at 7.30, breakfasting at 8. Lunch is at 1.30 and dinner at 7.30. Pennsylvania's crew will arrive tomorrow and Columbia's about the 11th. Neither Cornell nor Yale will come until a few days before the race.

Mr. Lehmann has expressed himself as greatly pleased with the quarters at Krum Elbow, and says that the course is a fine four-mile stretch. The 'Varsity are rowing in the '99 shell and the Freshman in the Clasper boat. All the men are well and in good spirits. The Freshmen are now showing continued improvement, after somewhat unsatisfactory work on Thursday, largely due to the rough water.
