A bill is pending before the Senate to establish a free national university, in accordance with the wishes of George Washington, who indicated in his will as his preference for the site the land now occupied by the old Naval Observatory, and who left a large endowment fund, which has been lost, through negligence on the part of the government. The object of this bill is to found an institution, which would obviate the necessity of foreign study. The present general movement in favor of the university was begun in 1891 by the appointment of a committee, of which Chief Justice Fuller is chairman. As the Senate bill only carries with it an appropriation of a few thousand dollars, for preliminary organization, a committee, composed of representative women, has been formed for the purpose of raising $250,000, in order to erect the first of the university buildings, provided the pending bill is passed.
