MEMORIAL SERVICE.

In Memory of Marshall Newell to be Held Sunday.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

There will be a special service in memory of Marshall Newell held in Appleton Chapel at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Dr. Francis G. Peabody will officiate and President Eliot and many members of the Faculty have signified their intention of being present. Mr. W. R. Spalding '87 will be the organist and the College choir will sing the following selections;

"Beati Mortui," Mendelssohn, and "Integer Vitae," Fleming. There will also be a special solo.

All members and graduates of the University are invited to attend.

On Thursday Dr. Peabody received the following letter from a number of Newell's classmates and friends:

BOSTON, January 5, 1898.Rev. Francis G. Peabody,

DEAR SIR:- There has been a feeling, generally expressed by the graduates of Harvard, and classmates of Marshall Newell '94, that it would be most appropriate to hold a service in his memory. They suggest that it would be fitting that such a service should be held in Appleton Chapel, in the midst of the University he loved so well. We, representing his class-mates and such graduates, ask permission to use Appleton Chapel for such a Memorial Service on the afternoon of Sunday, January 9th. We would also tender the request that you officiate at this service.

Trusting that there will be no difficulty in granting our request, we beg to remain,

Very respectfully yours,

GEORGE C. LEE, JR., STEPHEN V. R. CROSBY, NEAL RANTOUL, BERNARD W. TRAFFORD, LINCOLN DAVIS, ROBERT W. EMMONS, 2D, BERTRAM GORDON WATERS.Dr. Peabody's reply follows:

CAMBRIDGE, Jan. 7, 1898.

To Messrs. George C. Lee, Jr., and Others:

DEAR SIRS:- President Eliot authorizes me to say, in answer to your letter of Jan. 5th, that the University will very cordially welcome to its Chapel the friends and classmates of Marshall Newell, and will most gladly arrange, in their behalf, a brief and simple Memorial Service, to be held next Sunday afternoon, January 9th, at 3 o'clock.

It will be a help to the University to have you come back to us with this loving testimony to the permanent influence of a true, pure, unassuming and manly life.

Respectfully yours,

FRANCIS G. PEABODY.
