PHYSICAL TRAINING.

Compulsory Systems at Other Colleges Where No Credit is Given.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In last Friday's CRIMSON there were given the methods in use at several colleges which require gymnasium exercise throughout the college course and give credit for the work done. Below will be found a list of colleges which require physical training without giving credit for it. Although Dr. Sargent does not recommend or believe in compulsory gymnasium work without credit, today's list is given to show how general is the recognition by college faculties of the value and need of physical training.

Yale, Williams and the Western Reserve University require gymnasium work of the freshman class only. Wesleyan, Colby, Haverford, Trinity, Rutgers, Smith, Tufts, Cornell, and the Universities of Wisconsin, California, Kansas, and of Indianapolis, all require gymnasium work of the freshman and sophomore classes. The University of North Carolina requires exercise of all students except seniors. Lafayette, Bucknell, Colgate, Dartmouth, Drury, Hanover, Lehigh, Union, the University of Minnesota, and Wabash require exercise of the students in all classes. The University of Chicago to enforce its gymnasium requirements will not allow students who take an excessive number of cuts to continue their university work until the deficiency is made up.

In addition to these, 104 universities and colleges of the country have military departments under the charge of officers detailed by the government. In a large number of these institutions, such as the State College of Kentucky, the University of Georgia, Lawrence University, Franklin and Marshall, and Knox College, participation in the military drill is required.

Within recent years the smaller eastern colleges, such as Brown, Bowdoin, Amherst, Dartmouth, Lehigh, Wesleyan, Lafayette, Trinity and Rutgers, have made remarkable showings in their athletic contests with Yale, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Harvard. Perhaps an explanation of their uniform success can be found in the fact that all of these colleges, without an exception, require physical training of their students, exempting, however, from the gymnasium work all men on the athletic squads. The result is that many men, who would not otherwise think of doing so, come out for the various teams to escape the less exciting gymnasium exercise. The athletic efficiency of these colleges is thus materially increased.
