On Soldiers Field.

The 'varsity football squad began practice on Soldiers Field Monday afternoon, September 20. All of last year's eleven, excepting those who have graduated, were on hand the first day. In addition a large number of candidates most of whom have been more or less prominent on the class teams in the last year or two appeared. The candidates on the first day numbered 36, but since then the squad has increased until there are at present almost twice that number.

The work at the outset was made very easy, consisting on the first day of falling on the ball and taking a run. The forenoon practice of the second day, and every morning practice since, has consisted of a drill with 8-pound iron dumb-bells followed by a run on the part of the linemen and punting by the backs. The afternoon work was more varied. Wednesday an eleven was picked out to practice signals, and Thursday another squad was formed. Friday two elevens were put opposite each other for practice in breaking through. Saturday there was only morning practice.

James G. Lathrop has had charge of the physical condition of the men and will continue to look after it throughout the season.

The coaching committee, which consists of Dr. W. A. Brooks. R. W. E mmons and Mr. L. F. Deland has appointed W. Cameron Forbes '91, head coach. Mr. Forbes will be remembered as the coach of the '98 and of the '99 Freshman elevens. He will, in training the eleven this year, pick out the 'varsity team earlier, perhaps next Friday, so that the men can play together more in the games. They will then be worked less severely in the practice between games, so as to avoid all possible chance of injury. The third departure from the methods of former years is that the Freshmen will not be allowed to play with the 'varsity squad, although perhaps several of the best players in the incoming class will be requested to join the 'varsity.

Yesterday afternoon the first line-up of the year was called for. Two short halves were played, in the first of which the 'Varsity did not score. In the second, two touchdowns were made, both by Dibblee. The best rushes were made by Sullivan and Dibblee on the 'Varsity and Sawin on the second. Haughton, who is being tried at fullback on the 'Varsity, ran well with the ball. In the line Donald played a steady game at right tackle. J. L. Knox '98, candidate for quarterback, had his left ankle sprained while playing on the second eleven. His was the first injury of the season. The line-up was as follows:

VARSITY. SECOND.

Cabot, l. e. r. e., Graydon, Sands.

Swain, l. t. r. t., Barney, Wight, Littig.

Bouve, l. g. r. g., Hoague.
