The 'Varsity Wins in an Interesting Pitchers' Contest.

The 'Varsity nine, though somewhat weakened by the absence of several players, who were given a rest after the Princeton game, defeated the University of Vermont yesterday by the score of 5 to 3.

The game was really a contest between the pitchers and both were very effective, Fitz doing a little the better work. Chandler was rather unsteady, and in the fourth inning was replaced by Loughlin, who has been taken to the 'Varsity table again. Loughlin lost a chance for a double play in the ninth inning by neglecting to tag the runner, when, with a man on first, Foster fielded a grounder, touched his base, and threw to him.

Each side scored one run in the first inning,- Vermont by two errors and a hit and Harvard by a hit, Lynch's being hit by a pitched ball, a passed ball, and a sacrifice hit.

In the fourth inning, Stevenson made a single and was forced down to second when Miner hit Burgess. Then Stevenson scored and Burgess went to third on an error of the first baseman. Dean got his base on balls, stole second, and went to third on a passed ball, on which Burgess scored. Dean scored himself a moment later on a sacrifice hit.

Harvard made one more run in the fifth inning and Vermont scored again in the sixth and ninth innings.
