The ball game with Holy Cross on Holmes Field Saturday was lost in the ninth inning, when Holy Cross scored four runs on six consecutive hits, making the score 6-2.
Harvard was helpless before Lennihan's delivery, Loughlin's two singles and Rand's safe hit with two men on bases being the only hits made off him. The fielding on Harvard's side was perfect, but Fitz pitched a very weak game and allowed Holy Cross sixteen hits with a total of eighteen bases.
Beale and Burgess were both kept busy out in the field and accepted several difficult chances. Beale made two magnificent throws from deep centre-one in the sixth, which cut off McAllister at the home plate; and the other in the ninth, which would have saved a run had not Fitz stopped it and thrown Gaffney out at third. Rand made two very pretty catches and kept Holy Cross from scoring in the fifth inning by a quick throw to Scannell, after cutting off a hot grounder.
Lavin started the game for Holy Cross with a two-bagger and went to third on W. H. Fox's single. The next three men were retired, however, and no runs were scored. Harvard went out in one, two three order in every inning but the third and ninth. In the third, Loughlin got safely to first but was put out at second, Litchfield going to first on flelder's choice. Fitz got a base on balls, stole second, and came in behind Litchfield on Rand's single.
Holy Cross scored two runs in the next two innings, and after that the score remained a tie until Fitz went to pieces in the ninth and let in four runs.
