Weld-B. A. A. Race.

The Weld intermediate crew won a splendid victory over the strong B. A. A. eight yesterday in a mile and a half race over the regular course, in the fast time of 8m. 4s. The result was somewhat unlooked for, as the B. A. A. crew were regarded as exceptionally fast, three of their men having rowed in the 'Varsity boat at Poughkeepsie last year. They recently defeated the intermediates over the same course and won a hard race from the Millstreams, one of the fastest New England eights, last Saturday. The conditions were fairly good, as there was little tide, and but a light wind against the crews.

The start was made at the B. A. A. float at 6.10. At the word the Weld caught the water first and jumped immediately ahead. For the first quarter they led by three-fourths of a length, but at Dartmouth street B. A. A. had cut the lead down and were on even terms. Both crews were rowing in fine form at this point. From here on the Weld crew began to draw ahead, and at the bridge had a half length of clear water. The final spurt showed excellent rowing, both crews exerting themselves to the utmost; but the Weld rapidly increased its lead and crossed the line two and a half lengths in front of the B. A. A. boat. Both crews were very much overcome at the finish.

The Weld showed much improvement over the form shown in their former race with the B. A. A. They had a firm, hard catch and rowed well together. Dobyns at stroke rowed a very heady race, keeping the stroke high, but at the same time making it strong and long. Blake and Coleman also rowed a particularly good race. The B. A. A. was somewhat slow on the shoot, but rowed together well and finished strong.

The order of the two crews was as follows:

Weld-Stroke, Dobyns; 7, DuBois; 6, Blake; 5, Coleman; 4, Garrett; 3, Wood; 2, Bancroft; bow, Pierce.

B. A. A.- Stroke, Tudor; 7, Derby; 6, Fennessey; 5, Townsend; 4, Sleeper; 3, Horton; 2, Guild; bow, DuBlois.
