THE NINE WINS.

Cornell Beaten 10-4 in a Loosely-Played Game.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The 'Varsity had little difficulty in defeating Cornell yesterday on Holmes Field by the score of 10-4. It was a very poorly-played game throughout, however, notable chiefly for errors and also for some heavy batting. Cornell led in errors, making eight to Harvard's seven. It was perhaps a little too cold for good ball, but some of the errors made were inexcusable. Paine pitched a fine game again, striking out six men and keeping Cornell's hits well scattered. He was steady at critical times, watched the men on bases well and did not give a base on balls.

At the bat every Harvard man got two hits except Chandler and Scannell. Beale kept up his batting streak by making a single and a pretty three-bagger, which brought in a run. Young led Cornell at the bat, making a single, a threebagger, and a home run. He also ran bases well and played an excellent game behind the bat.

In the first inning, for Cornell, Young led off with a three-base hit, and later scored on Kingsley's single. Paine put the side out by catching Beacham off first and striking out two men. For Harvard, Rand's three-bagger and Haughton's single netted a run. In the second inning Harvard scored another run on Dean's good base-running. A home run by Young tied the score in the third inning. Cornell's other runs were made in the fourth and the seventh. Stratton, scored in the fourth on errors and Beacham in the seventh on a base hit, and a two-bagger by Murtaugh.

In the fifth inning Harvard made two runs on a base hit by Burgess, a twobagger by Haughton, and a triple by Beale. In the sixth, Dean made a base hit and scored again. Beale, Stevenson, Dean and Paine made runs in the seventh.
