Harvard '98 defeated Yale '98 at baseball yesterday afternoon on Holmes Field by the score of 7 to 4. The game was well played and exciting throughout. Harvard won by sharp playing in the field and by Cozzens' magnificent pitching at critical times.
Yale began by scoring one run in the first inning. Wadsworth got his base on balls and stole second. He reached third on Bement's sacrifice and came home on a wild pitch. Harvard made a pretty double play in the second after Turnbull had hit safely. Simmonds knocked a grounder to McVey, who threw to Holt, and Holt caught the runner at first.
Harvard scored her first run in the third inning by the aid of bases on balls and a pretty hit by Holt. Manning came in on McVey's grounder to Wadsworth, and Holt and Vincent scored on a wild pitch. In the fourth, Cozzens struck out the first three men. For Harvard, Hayes scored by good base-running.
No one got to first for either side in the fifth. In the sixth, Chester got his base on balls. Wadsworth attempted to sacrifice, but Cozzens threw to second, putting Chester out. Wadsworth stole second, Cozzens gave bases on balls to Bement and Chamberlin, and a hit by Ely brought in Wadsworth and Bement. Holt caught Hobbs' fly and brilliantly fielded a hard grounder by Turnbull, putting the side out. In Harvard's half, Foster was hit by a pitched ball and Hayes brought him home with a timely three-base hit.
In the seventh, Goodman knocked a sharp grounder to Foster who ran him out at first, but the play resulted in an injury to Cozzens' which made Harvard's prospects seem very blue. Cozzens ran across to cover first and collided with Foster, receiving a bad cut on the ankle. For the rest of the game he had to hobble about as best he could, but he rose to the occasion and pluckily continued his good work. In the second half Manning scored on a base on balls, a passed ball and a sacrifice.
Cozzens showed the effects of his injury in the eighth. Bement went out on a fly to centre, which Manning got under after a long run, and Chamberlin followed with a home run hit beyond the Willows. Foster then retired the side by catching a couple of difficult high fouls. For Harvard, Hayes scored again on a combination of errors and good base running. In the same inning Goodman distinguished himself by a good stop in left field.
The Yale men were retired for the last time by Cozzens's good pitching and fast work at third by Vincent.
