The Spring Concert.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The annual spring concert of the musical clubs last night proved a decided success. Although Sanders Theatre was by no means filled, there was a moderately large audience, and some of the pieces were enthusiastically received. After the concert nearly all of the audience went to the dance in Memorial.

Considering the frequent encores, the programme was perhaps a little too long and tried the attention of the listeners, but with a few exceptions the character of the performance was good.

The Pierian Sodality opened the concert with the overture from Orpheus, which they played as well as could have been expected, for the selection was entirely too serious for them. On the whole the selections of the Pierian were hardly spirited enough for such a concert, though in their encores they played more lively pieces.

The Mandolin Club appeared but once, and gave only an average performance, though they received one encore.

The Glee Club did extremely well on the whole. "Johnny Harvard" they sang with much spirit, but somewhat too fast, thus losing a little of the effect. The "Rhine Wine" song was well done and deserved its encore, as did F. A. Turner's solo. The second series of songs the Glee Club sang was mediocre, but in their final appearance their work was creditable, G. R. Osborne's solo being especially good.

The Banjo Club showed much ability and played with a great deal of life. Their last piece,- "The Parker Cake Walk,"- was perhaps the best performance of the evening.

Altogether the concert was extremely creditable, and the performances well up to the standard.
