Yesterday afternoon Harvard defeated University of Virginia by the score of 9 to 3. The nine showed a marked improvement in both fielding and batting, making nine hits and only three errors.
The game started in well for Virginia, as Fitz gave Huxton his base on balls and then allowed three hits, one of them being a misjudged fly which should have been caught. After the first inning, however, Virginia only secured two hits, and Fitz pitched a very steady game, striking out three men and giving only two bases on balls.
Harvard scored in the first, second and sixth innings. In the second, with Stevenson and Chandler on bases, Fitz knocked a pretty three base hit and then scored on a wild pitch. Four runs were made in the sixth inning by good batting, aided by errors of Mellor and Martin.
Chandler did the best fielding, making a phenomenal one hand catch of a swift liner, and accepting all of his four chances.
Virginia at times played a brilliant game, making three very pretty double plays. They went to preces, however, in the sixth inning and their two errors were costly. In the seventh inning Mellor was put in the box and McNair took his place at first.
With the exception of Dean, the Harvard men were slow in running bases.
