SOPHOMORE DEBATERS CHOSEN.

The Trial Speaking Promises an Interesting Debate.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The final trial of the Sophomore Debating Club to choose a team for the Freshman-Sophomore inter-club debate on Jan. 10 was held last night in Sever 11. The question debated was: "Resolved, That the United States Senators should be elected by direct vote of the people."

The speaking was a decided improvement over that of the first trial. The general form was better, and the men, both in refutation and in presentation of argument, showed evidence of more careful preparation. There was, however, a slight tendency to cover too much ground.

The judges, F. R. Steward 2L, G. H. Dorr 1L, and W. E. Weaver '98, selected B. Brooks, O. d. Evans, A. L. Richards and E. E. Sargent. No alternate was chosen as it is the intention to leave the training of the team in the hands of the 1900 team which debated against the Union Sophomores last year. These men, W. P. Eaton, J. A. Richards, S. B. Southworth and R. C. Bolling, will decide on the alternate, after the men have still further shown their powers in preparation and speaking under criticism.
