The preliminary trial debate to choose speakers from the Sophomore Debating Club to speak against the Freshman Club on Jan. 10, was held last evening in Sever 11. The question debated was: "Resolved, That the United States should annex the Hawaiian Islands."
Twenty-seven men spoke, which is only two less than the number at the Freshman preliminary trial, although the latter club has over twice the number of members. On the average, the speaking was good. The men showed a careful preparation on the main points but there was very little rebuttal and not enough life was thrown into the speaking. The speakers showed little tendency to cover too much ground.
The judges, W. E. Hutton 3L., E. V. Grabill 2L., and W. Morse 1900, chose the following fifteen men to speak at the final trial: P. A. Atherton, A. L. Becker, B. Brooks, H. S. Bowers, E. C. Carter, A. M. Chandler, W. M. Chadbourne, D. F. Drake, O. D. Evans, R. C. Hatch, G. A. Morison, H. H. Morse, A. L. Richards, E. E. Sargent and C. R. Taylor.
The other men who spoke were: H. A. Wadleigh, H. J. Davenport, C. M. Underwood, A. Hasbrouck, M. Hirsh, F. W. Buxton, A. M. Fairlie, C. J. Kullmer, R. B. Parsons, F. W. Aldred, J. M. Kullmer, and F. F. Collier.
The final trial will be held December 16 on the question for the interclub debate: "Resolved, That United States Senators should be elected by direct vote of the people."
From the fifteen men chosen last night the team to speak against the Freshman club will be chosen. Speeches will be limited to six minutes.
