A strong wind greatly interfered with the race on the Charles River, Saturday afternoon, between the Weld four-oared barges. The course was a mile straightaway, extending from the Union Boat Club to the sluice beyond Harvard Bridge. Savage's crew drew the inside position next the wall; Marsh's was in number two, Hawes's in three, and Morrill's on the outside. The barge stroked by Hawes 1900, started off first and held the lead the whole way, crossing the line a length ahead of Morrill's crew. The time of the race was 7 minutes 56 seconds.
The make-ups of the crews and their order of finishing were as follows:
First-Stroke, Hawes 1900; 3, Bolling 1900; 2, Hosley 1900; bow, Mallinckrodt 1900.
Second-Stroke, Morrill 1900; 3, Wilson '98; 2, Newton '98; bow, Gould '98.
Third-Stroke, Marsh '99; 3, Lapsley '99; 2, Butler '99; bow, Ruhl '99.
Fourth-Stroke, Savage '99; 3, Alger '99; 2, Richards '99; bow, Norton '99.
It is announced that the Weld Boat Club will give cups for another novice four-oared race to take place about the first of December, if enough men signify their intention of rowing, to the coach this week.
