Scenery for "Athalie."

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The French Department has recently received a model of the scenery to be used in the production of "Athalie."

The single scene represents a vestibule opening into an inner court of the temple at Jerusalem. The back-ground is a semi-circular wall pierced by three heavily curtained doors at its centre. Three low, broad steps lead up to the middle door.

Little is known about the Jewish temple except that it closely resembled the palaces and temples of Nineveh in many of its details. Hence the decorative work has been copied from reproductions of the latter buildings.

The proscenium is patterned after the House of Cedars at Lebanon.
