EXETER, N. H., November 12, 1897.- Exeter defeated Andover 18-14 yesterday afternoon in one of the best and cleverest contests ever seen between preparatory schools. Five minutes' more play would undoubtedly have enabled Andover to score again, and by kicking a goal to win the game. As it was, Exeter took a brace just in time and managed to hold their opponents. Any other game but football would have been postponed, for the field was literally a mass of mud.

Exeter scored twice in the first half and Andover twice in the second. In the second half, Schrieber's fatal fumble on the kick-off enabled Exeter to get the ball near the line and score by a determined effort. During the greater part of the first half Exeter forced the play, but seemingly became discouraged at being forced to a safety and weakened greatly in the second half.
