Freshman Football Squad.

The three squads of candidates for the Freshman football team went through their signal practice in the first half of yesterday's play. After this preliminary work two short halves were played against the second 'Varsity. Hallowell's squad lined-up for the first half and played a very fast, lively game. At first the Freshmen seemed unable to break up their opponent's interference but after a few moments of play they steadied down and more than held their own against the heavier team. Towards the end of the half, Reid, the Freshman fullback, caught a punt and went around the right end for a touchdown. The goal was not kicked. Hallowell, Fincke and Reid played splendidly for the Freshmen.

The 1901 line-up in the first half was: Hallowell, r. e.; J. Lawrence, r. t.; Talbot, r. g.; Wheelwright, c.; Patton, l. g.; Jaynes, l. t.; Shaw, l. e.; Fincke, q. b.; Ellis, r. h. b.; Kendall, l. h. b.; Reid, f. b.

Daly's squad played the second half, and, although handicapped by darkness, they put up almost as fine a game as the other squad. The line held well and tackled hard, and the quarter-back, C. D. Daly, kicked splendidly. Several times he returned the ball for a good gain when the other team was almost on top of him. The second 'Varsity scored once in this half. The Freshmen failed to score although they had the ball on their opponents five-yard line once. The 1901 line-up in the second half was; W. Lawrence, r. e.; Mackay, r. t.; Force, r. g.; Stilling, c.; Henderson, l. g.; Brayton, l. t.; Whitney, l. e.; C. D. Daly, q. b.; Davis, r. h. b.; White, l. h. b.; Whitman, f. b.

The showing made by the 1901 men was very satisfactory and the life and vigor which they put into their play promises well for the future success of the team. Manager Blythe has arranged two games for the Freshmen. The first with Cambridge Manual Training School will be played Thursday, and the second with Exeter on Saturday, on the 'Varsity field.
