FALL ROWING BEGUN.

The candidates for the University crew began rowing on the Charles yesterday afternoon. In accordance with a plan decided upon during the summer between Mr. Lehmann and Captain Goodrich, a number of men who have rowed before were called out on the first day of the college year. These candidates are to be made up into four,- possibly eight,- fours which will train for a brief period and row a race the first of November. After a week's intermission, two trial eights will be chosen from the crews of the fours, and these will race in barges, as last year, on the first of December. About six weeks after the Christmas recess,- or after the mid-year examinations,- all rowing candidates will be called out on their class crews; there will be no University crew until after the class races. This plan necessitates the rowing of the class races about the middle of April, two weeks earlier than usual.

After an interval of about ten days from the class races two eights, the University and second crews, will be picked from the class crews, the selection being based largely on the showing made in the class races. These two crews will row together every day for the rest of the training season and, as Captain Goodrich expressed it, there will be a long fight among these sixteen men to make the eight coveted places in the 'Varsity boat on the day of the race. Only those men who row in the race will receive an "H" this year.

Yesterday afternoon there was very little rowing. Captain Goodrich, J. F. and J. H. perkins had all the men out tubbing. They rowed in this order: J. F. and J. H. Perkins, Bull and Biddle, Blake and Adams '99, Higginson and Heath, Brown and Glidden, Thomson and Marvin, McDuffie and Adams '98, J. F. Perkins and Saltonstall, Colleman '99 and Byrd 1900.

After the tubbing practice, Captain Goodrich tried one of the new fours with the following crew: Stroke, J. F. Perkins; 3, Goodrich; 2, Thomson; bow, Marvin.

Four captains are to be appointed tomorrow or nexst day and these captains will choose their men by lot from among the candidates. More men may be called out so that each four may have five or six men to choose from.
