THE NINE WINS.

At Providence, yesterday afternoon, Harvard won the third game of the Brown series by the score of 6 to 1. The playing of the Harvard team was almost perfect; no errors were made, almost every opportunity was accepted, every man made a hit, no one struck out, and only one hit was made off Paine. Neither catcher had a passed ball, and neither pitcher made a wild pitch or hit a batter.

The marvellous fielding of the Brown infield in practice was in marked contrast with the slower and less steady practice fielding of the Harvard men, but when the game had begun the fielding of the Brown men became loose as that of the Harvard men became more steady. Even then the work of the Brown infield was at times beautiful, three double plays being made.

Rand distinguished himself by making two timely hits which scored runs and in the field he made two star catches which prevented runs. Chandler again showed up well at shortstop, accepting all his chances and making a hit. The pitching by Paine was as steady as it was effective from the beginning to the end of the game. In five innings only three men came to the bat in each inning, in three other innings only four men had a chance to hit the ball, and in the seventh when Brown's only run was made, but five men had a chance to bat.

Harvard made her first run in the second. After Clarkson had gone out on a grounder, Haughton got his base on balls. Rand advanced him with a single to left and Lauder's error on Stevenson's grounder filled the bases. Paine then hit to centre field but Sedgwick muffed, allowing Haughton to score. Stevenson, however, was caught at second and shortly afterwards Rand was cut off at the plate in trying to score when the ball was thrown to second on Paine's attempt to steal.

In the seventh Harvard made sure of the game by getting five more runs. Clarkson led off with a two-base hit to the bleachers in right field, and went to third on Lauder's fumble of Haughton's grounder. Rand sent Clarkson in by a second hit to left and advanced Haughton to third. Rand was caught out at second, but Stevenson's two-bagger over the left-field fence scared Haughton. Paine continued the hitting by getting a single, and Chandler got to first on balls. Dean's single to left and Robinson's bad throw scored Stevenson, Paine and Chandler. Adouble play on Scannell's grounder ended the scoring for Harvard.

In the second half of the inning Brown made her only run. Robinson got his base on balls and scored when Lauder sent the ball among the carriages in centre field for three bases. The next six men went out in succession. Brown did not succeed in getting any more men to first, but Harvard got two men on base in each of the last two innings.
